Hello there, my fellow daytime TV watchers.

Are you out of work at the moment? What's your story? Are you happy being unemployed, or are you actively seeking work? What are you doing about it? Do you perhaps have any amusing anecdotes to tell? Have you considered going on the Jeremy Kyle show?

:)

I'm unemployed at the moment. It was fun for a week or two but now it's just depressing.

I'm looking for a new job, hopefully doing something that I'll enjoy although that isn't looking too likely. It seems that unless you do an apprenticeship the only jobs available in this city are in banks/insurance companies etc. Boring!!

Are those of us who are currently employed but desperately attempting to formulate an alternative way of making a living able to join this club, Felix?

I've been working for the past few months for the first time in my life after being out of work for years, i don't miss the daytime TV and i certainly don't miss those monotonous talks down the job center...

hmmm... i'm not sure. it seems rather insensitive to come into this thread to say that you currently have a job. :|

only joking. :D

tell us what you're doing about it then fishy.

i've been out of work for 9 WEEKS now. 8o i'm hoping to get a phone call any day now, and if not, i'll be phoning them. i'm told i'm on a shortlist for an interview, but it better happen soon. i''ve got enough dosh for about another 6 weeks or so... :\

i need to buy TOYS.

I'm not working at the moment but am very busy with applications. The job centre woman smiled at me this morning when I bluffed the fact that I don't and wont fill that stupid job diary thing in.

My problem is where i'm currently located it's difficult to get out to the business parks which are on the outskirts of the city so i'd need to get 10 miles to the city and then another 4 out on public transport.

That problem was solved last night when my Dad said he'd front me the money for a flat i've found in town til I find a job . Which now opens loads more doors! :)

I need toys too!

I've been out for almost a month. Rapidly reaching the point where I really could do with earning a bit of money.

Been out of work for ages - went for an interview job last Wednesday (16th) - I was told I would hear back regardless of whether or not I was hired.

Just hoping it's taking such a long time as they're seriously considering me :D

Basically, trying desparately hard to look outside of the box I've mentally constructed (and being a damned fine architect, even if I say so myself, it's particularly well built - blast!!! :X ) which has me lacking confidence in my ability to earn sufficient income (which isn't a lot) in other ways.

So far, I had a long session with a guy who's a career consultant specialising in helping those made redundant in 'later life', let's say ;) He set me off doing a bunch of different 'brain-storming' exercises, trying to list out skills, strengths, motivations, etc., and also put me onto some psychometric tests, which have flagged up a lot of interesting stuff. Now have to put it all together and arrange a further session with him to see what the next steps might be.

Hope you get that call soon, Felix, and that anyone else seriously looking for something finds what they're looking for :)

I was looking at that Cogent thing that Spade was suggesting and I've printed off the application form to send it to them but they want to know which jobs I'd prefer to be trained in. They are:

Electrical Installation & Maintenance Technicians:
Do not confuse this type of technician with a domestic electrician! Their job is to look after high voltage power generation and distribution systems, motors, control systems and electrical equipment specially designed for use in hazardous areas.

Instrument & Control Technicians:
The role of these technicians is to calibrate and maintain measurement systems (for flow, level, pressure and temperature), electronic and pneumatic process control systems and fire and gas detection systems and analysers.

Mechanical Maintenance Technicians:
Mechanical maintenance technicians look after valves, pumps and transmission systems. In addition, they're responsible for prime movers such as diesel engines and gas turbines (similar to aircraft engines).

Production Technicians:
These technicians start up, control, monitor and shut down sub-systems. Their role is to maintain safe operations and achieve production targets. Production technicians who are competent in all aspects of their job may well become control room technicians. In this case they become responsible for the overall production process via computerised distribution control systems.

I know it's a shot in the dark but which of these are most likely to be based offshore? You do 18 months full-time in college then a 2 year work placement and I'd rather have that work placement offshore because if it was onshore it would probably mean having to move to Aberdeen. Plus offshore would be cooler %)

Been out of work for the last five years, would have appreciated it if I wasn't so out of it for about 2/3s of that time. Benefits are about 10K a year, plus rent paid. My social worker has me fixing people's computers which I know will eventually lead to voluntary work then paid employment.

For the drugs i had to be on it wasn't worthwhile, that changed 18 months ago to chems that do more than leave me stupid.

I go rock climbing, do pottery, tai chi, the gym and poi. I don't have a TV but i do have bittorrents and 4od. My social worker takes me for blood tests / shopping etc, philosophical chats over a cup of tea with my housing support worker. Occasionally I get a bit messy but I'm learning how to deal with that.

Listening to Leonard Cohen atm, genius.

i got a few sessions with one of those guys a few years ago. it was really helpful. good for building up your self-confidence and fixing up your CV.

deathrow - all of those jobs are common offshore. if you can get your foot in the door with any of them, you're laughing. they're all what is termed 'core crew' jobs, which usually means a staff job and going to the same platform all the time. that's a good thing. :)

I've always fancied an apprenticeship but I think to be deemed suitable in the eyes of society I'd have to have a sex change.

However, I do know a girl who completed the Nissan mechanics apprenticeship when I was at college!

I knew a girl in Swindon who put engines together for Honda.

No way, you shouldn't let that put you off. I've been looking at Modern Apprenticeships and there are loads out there. I've applied for a few Quantity Surveying ones which sound good and one for BAE Systems (I've done their tests and am now waiting to see if I passed).

There are loads available in the construction industry so I applied for a few different ones there too.

This one I'm doing now for Cogent is 18 months at college full-time which isn't ideal to me but I reckon the long term benefits would be much better so I'm applying for it anyway.

Things have changed significantly in the construction industry, with the percentage of femal tradespersons on site becoming ever more noticeable, CCF.

Is there anything in particular that interests you?

I say all us EADD'ers build our own community somewhere remote where we can harvest our own crops like those Jonestown people. Except without all the religion and the unnecessary bloodshed. :|

9 weeks? That's probably not too far from the amount of time I've actually spent working (legit work, that is). I think it's 13 years since I had a legit job cos I'm not apparently not allowed one :\. Thanks for paying your taxes folks. (No, that isn't sarcasm.)

Having said that, I do voluntary work through the week and a couple of evening courses to keep the brain a-ticking (just) so it's not like I just sit on my arse all day. Well, I do really, but in a vaguely useful function to society :).
