I was looking at that Cogent thing that Spade was suggesting and I've printed off the application form to send it to them but they want to know which jobs I'd prefer to be trained in. They are:

Electrical Installation & Maintenance Technicians:
Do not confuse this type of technician with a domestic electrician! Their job is to look after high voltage power generation and distribution systems, motors, control systems and electrical equipment specially designed for use in hazardous areas.

Instrument & Control Technicians:
The role of these technicians is to calibrate and maintain measurement systems (for flow, level, pressure and temperature), electronic and pneumatic process control systems and fire and gas detection systems and analysers.

Mechanical Maintenance Technicians:
Mechanical maintenance technicians look after valves, pumps and transmission systems. In addition, they're responsible for prime movers such as diesel engines and gas turbines (similar to aircraft engines).

Production Technicians:
These technicians start up, control, monitor and shut down sub-systems. Their role is to maintain safe operations and achieve production targets. Production technicians who are competent in all aspects of their job may well become control room technicians. In this case they become responsible for the overall production process via computerised distribution control systems.

I know it's a shot in the dark but which of these are most likely to be based offshore? You do 18 months full-time in college then a 2 year work placement and I'd rather have that work placement offshore because if it was onshore it would probably mean having to move to Aberdeen. Plus offshore would be cooler %)

I have mates who are doing the Electrical, Mechanical and Instument Technician jobs. The instrument one sounds easiest from what I've heard, basically just walk about checking temperature guages according to my mate. He says they all auto calibrate them selves so he doesn't so much.

I think you definitely go offshore or at least get a choice. It's like a 2 year probation period which you can actually finish quicker if you get your finger out, get the work done and do all the bits and peices you need to become fully qualified. My mate has just finished quite a bit early as he's been putting the effort in which now means he can get a bigger wage increase.

It does sound really good. I sent my application off today so hopefully they'll get back to me soon. I'd be well up for going offshore if given a choice.

Does offshore really appeal to you?

Being stuck in the middle of the north sea on an oil rig for 14 days solid, working 12hr shifts sounds like my worst nightmare.

Money certainly isn't bad though.

It does appeal to me yeah. Far more than being stuck in an office 5 days a week does. I don't think I could hack that again. I need something a bit different.

Aye fair enough office work does seem quite shit. I did work experience a few years back for some Marketing company, obviously office based was only there one morning a week and hated it. Total shite.

I didn't mind it too much when I was there because you get used to the routine and you don't really notice it but now that I've left I may as well use the opportunity to find something interesting and different rather than just slipping into another job which would be easy to find but offers nothing in terms of a career, it would just be another admin job that leads nowhere.

You could make a website and charge people 50 pence everytime you want to talk to someone about work/ask them about their job etc :)

:D

Felix you go on about work far too much, get a life (or a job). :p

Office work has it's merits though.....internet access all day long, so plenty of poker, Bluelight, porn and more! Plus when it's freezing cold and pissing it down, looking out the window aint too bad a thing!

Hello there, my fellow daytime TV watchers.

Are you out of work at the moment? What's your story?

i have been on an intensive training course since August of last year which has taken up a lot of my time. It involved a fair few hours of study each day, watching programmes such as "To Buy or not to buy" and "Homes under the Hammer".

I had an interview at an estate agents this morning who were clearly impressed with my proactive and innovative method of preparing myself for the role.

Start Monday! Result!

^ CONGRATULATIONS -> You gonna don a top hat & smoke cigars ? :D

I'm getting a bit frustrated now. I did an apptitude test for a company on the 15th and they said they'd e-mail us to let us know if we passed the week after (last week) but I heard nothing so I emailed them and they said the guy hadn't finished checking all the results but they'd know in a few days. That was on the 24th. I'm getting impatiant, I want to know if I passed or not so I can stop hanging on to the idea of getting the job :X

How come you're not allowed to work?

Because of this.

As I said, not so great really :\.

I never though I'd crave a job, but I suppose when it really hits home that you have no choice in the matter, that changes. Forbidden fruit and all that.

Even if I tried really hard to come up with a reasonable CV, it would be impossible - "So, Mr. Genius, what exactly have you been up to since you left college. Work seems to have been a little thin on the ground..." - there's just nothing there to work with.

I'm essentially unemployable :(.

^ Ha! I think I'd fail the medical, but worth a try if I get really desperate. I'll bear it in mind :).
